ATIPCO, language professionals' regulatory in DRC

The Democratic Republic of Congo is a crossroads where several interests attracting public and private entities from diverse nationalities converge. Given such a shred of indisputable evidence, language professionals came together to set up a body responsible for regulating the country's translation, interpreting, or inter-linguistic communication sector.

The Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters of Congo is a non-profit association, under Congolese law, established in Kinshasa, the capital city of the Democratic Republic of Congo, following the laws laying down the general provisions applicable to non-profit associations in force (see Article 1, ATIPCO Statutes). It is professional, scientific, and apolitical, created for an unlimited period. It aims to evolve until it secures the creation of a National Association for Professional Translators and Interpreters of the Congo.

Following article 2 of our statutes, ATIPCO is headquartered in Kinshasa, at the School of Translation and Interpreting, within the Université Pédagogique Nationale/ National Pedagogical University. It can be transferred to any other place in the country upon decision by the General Assembly of the Association.

ATPCO's activities extend throughout the DRC with the possibility of opening other representation offices inside the DRC and overseas.

The goal of ATIPCO

The goal of ATIPCO is to represent the language profession in the DRC. It, therefore, brings together translators, interpreters, linguists, language teachers, bilingual journalists, bilingual secretaries and editors, and many more for training, professional development, and research to safeguard the interests of its members and promote international cooperation through demanding high professional values from its members.

Professional fellowship

ATIPCO promotes the spirit of professional brotherhood among its members. To do this end, it registers its members and classifies them based on their linguistic skills to ensure they respect the professional code of ethics.

Public or private sector

Ultimately, ATIPCO fulfills its trade union function by negotiating the collective agreements/conventions governing, in particular, working conditions, remuneration, staffing, and social protection, without limitation, for conference interpreters, translators, editors with clients and employers in the public or private sector, at national and international level.

Translator / Interpreter

A translator is a professional who works on written materials, with a greater possibility, given the technological evolution. He/she translates documents from language A, the source language, to language B, the target language.

While the interpreter performs the same translation exercise but orally during a conference, work meeting, seminar, and many more. With new information and communication technologies, the interpreter even intervenes online with videoconferencing interfaces
