Celebration of World Translation Day 2022: ATIPCO, a Driving Force for Dialogue and Cultural Openness in the DRC

On September 30, in Kinshasa, the Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters of Congo (ATIPCO), a member of the International Federation of Translators, celebrated World Translation Day. This event also coincides with the feast of Saint Jerome, the patron saint of translators. In this spirit of dedication to dialogue and mutual understanding, ATIPCO organized a conference-debate under the evocative theme, “A World Without Barriers.”

A World Without Barriers: A Conference to Awaken Minds and Hearts

From the opening moments, the atmosphere was charged with palpable energy, with participants gathering eagerly to exchange ideas and enrich each other’s perspectives. Professor Nlandu Diamena, Director of the Kinshasa School of Translation and Interpretation, opened the ceremony with a warm and dignified welcome. Alongside him, Medar Kitakani, translator and interpreter and an active member of ATIPCO, as well as other distinguished guests, each took the floor to share their insights and experiences, enriching the day's discussions.

Inspiring Voices Breaking Down Cultural and Linguistic Barriers

The keynote speakers then took turns exploring the many dimensions of the conference’s central theme. Yulu Kabamba, a prominent ATIPCO member, captivated the audience with his presentation on the power of language as a catalyst for cultural and diplomatic growth. He reminded attendees that in a world filled with often invisible but ever-present barriers—political, diplomatic, cultural, or linguistic—translators and interpreters play a vital role in dismantling these divides and fostering peace.

Alexandra Cardyn, speaking from Brussels, brought an international perspective, highlighting the technological tools and innovations that are increasingly empowering translators, making the world more accessible. She spoke eloquently about the importance of integrating modern technologies, such as specialized software for translation and interpretation, which facilitate broader dissemination of knowledge and culture. Her address underscored the profession’s constant evolution, encouraging Congolese translators to engage with the momentum of modernization.

The DRC: A Geological and Linguistic Treasure

Perhaps the most poignant moment of the conference arrived when speakers highlighted the Democratic Republic of Congo's linguistic richness, describing it not only as a “geological marvel” but also a “linguistic treasure,” reflecting its remarkable diversity of languages and dialects. Mr. Kitakani reinforced this perspective, noting that while the DRC is rich in natural resources, it is equally rich in cultural and linguistic heritage. He made a passionate call for all Congolese translators to embrace and promote this invaluable linguistic legacy.

Q&A and Closing: An Enlightening Exchange

Following the presentations, a Q&A session provided participants with a chance to engage directly with the speakers, delving deeper into timely issues such as the challenges of globalization and the need to elevate local languages in an increasingly interconnected world.

As the day concluded, the organizers extended heartfelt thanks to the participants and guests, underscoring the importance of this annual celebration for strengthening ties among professionals, promoting mutual understanding, and renewing a shared commitment to cultural and linguistic diversity.

An Inspiring Day Reinforcing ATIPCO’s Mission

World Translation Day 2022 was marked by thought-provoking discussions and a strong commitment from ATIPCO members, embodying the true spirit of this noble profession: building bridges across people, cultures, and languages. Through ATIPCO's leadership, translators and interpreters in the Congo continue to demonstrate their indispensable role in creating a “World Without Barriers.”

We look forward to seeing even more of you next year to celebrate our shared passion for languages and our common mission to bring people together beyond words, wherever they may be.
