The world of professional translation and interpretation in the DRC has lost one of its brightest talents and most cherished colleagues. On May 13, 2024, the Association of Professional Translators and Interpreters of Congo (ATIPCO) paid tribute to Augustin NDOMBE KAWISH’ BELOBI, a distinguished member tragically taken from us in a traffic accident on April 29. The solemn and heartfelt funeral ceremony brought together family, friends, colleagues, and many members of the Congolese translation industry. To honor his immense contributions, ATIPCO entrusted Alphonse YULU KABAMBA with delivering the eulogy—a powerful speech that retraced Augustin's journey, values, and exceptional impact.
Alphonse YULU KABAMBA described a man whose career, defined by exemplary professionalism, inspired so many. A translator and interpreter of international renown, Augustin embodied excellence, a profound respect for ethics, and an unwavering commitment to his clients and colleagues. Known for his punctuality and precision, he tackled even the most challenging tasks with warmth and humour, building friendships with those alongside him in the interpreting booth. His talent and dedication made him Advisor and the designated interpreter for former Prime Minister Augustin Matata Ponyo Mapon throughout his term in office—a demanding role that Augustin fulfilled with brilliance and devotion.
This tribute was also a moment to impart a lasting message to Augustin's children. Alphonse YULU KABAMBA reminded them that their father left them more than a professional legacy; he left them a treasure of intellect and values. “Your father has bequeathed to you a love of languages and a commitment to the truth of words—qualities that, like him, will take you far. Some of you may choose to follow in his footsteps, becoming interpreters, translators, or even internationally renowned linguists. Cherish this legacy, as it is the result of years of perseverance and dedication.”
When YULU KABAMBA concluded his speech, recounting the remarkable career of their dear colleague, the assembly, deeply moved, rose to their feet in spontaneous applause for Augustin, honoring a man who so fully embodied the values of their profession. This heartfelt ovation punctuated the solemn moment, symbolizing the indelible legacy left by an extraordinary individual.
After this ovation, the assembly observed a moment of silence in honor of the man who had exemplified so many of their profession’s highest values. In the respectful silence, the words of Alphonse YULU KABAMBA resonated as a final farewell: “On behalf of all translators and interpreters in the DRC, ATIPCO mourns the loss of a colleague, a friend, and an extraordinary man. On this day of mourning, we pay tribute to a rare and irreplaceable talent. Augustin, you built bridges between languages and cultures; today, we honor the indelible legacy you leave behind. May peace be your eternal rest.”
